Working as a botany researcher in tropical Indonesia has been a reason for me to choose James Cook University (JCU). The university offers many research and courses areas relating to tropical studies. JCU accommodates my interest in tropical plant sciences especially the location of its one main campus in Townsville and Cairns, North Queensland Australia. The tropical rainforests of The Wet Tropics Heritage occurs here besides the famous Great Barrier Reef. I can put my high confidence that I can apply my research in Indonesia in the future.

JCU, as a member of Innovative Research Universities—classified by the peak body, Australian Universities Association, has been reputable Nationally and Internationally.

James Cook University Open Day is annual event. It is an open-house occasion. I was at Science Area as part of School of Marine and Tropical Biology. We offered the visitors with various activities, demonstration, tour, presentation and talks. In this school we spoiled the visitors with exploring the wonders of the tropical world: from rainforests to warm coastal seas and coral reefs, discovering world-class research happening, having a go at various tropical rainforest creatures (e.g. live geckoes, snakes, frogs and scorpions) and coral creatures at marine touch tank, marvelling at the wonder of genetically-improved popcorn and challenging visitor with interactive displays 'what fish is that?' 'What type of fruit is this'. The visitors were also spoiled by botanical touring. They also did not miss out the career-opportunities in Marine and Tropical Biology presentations. In the end we would like to keep promoting our school who leads the world with tropical research and studies in Marine, Aquaculture, Plant Sciences, Agriculture and Zoology. Welcome to James Cook University..!

Amorphophallus titanum collection in Cibodas Botanic Gardens

Proudly as a member of Indonesian Flora Expedition Team 2000 led by Subekti Purwantoro, M.Si, we collected Amorphophallus titanum from Jambi, Sumatera Island Indonesia (as Mr Didi Supardi's ideas and passions). We worked hard packing the plant to transfer to Cibodas Botanic Garden.

I had conducted some research on the seed-biological aspect:

Thanks to Yuzammi, MSc (a graduate from University of New South Wales, Sydney-Australia and Aroids researcher in Bogor Botanic Gardens-Indonesian Institute of Sciences) for wonderful consultation and sharing knowledge. I'd memorize her words that living collections of Amorphophallus titanum all over the world are originated from the origin land 'Jambi-Sumatera', she's passionate to gather as many as attention from institutions/researchers overseas to contribute in research and conservation efforts on Amorphophallus titanum in Indonesia. Saving their habitats are also one of the focuses as they occur in areas close to local residential and farms/plantations. It's also known well that WWF has been conducting projects involving locals.

This plant has the biggest inflorescence in the world; the inflorescence can reach over 3 m in height. It grows only in the tropical rainforests of Sumatera Island of Indonesia in the wild. The "fragrance" of the inflorescence resembles rotting meat attracting flies which help its pollination.

Visit Bogor Botanic Gardens when it blooms approximately every 2-3 year..

Research on Rafflesia patma

studied Rafflesia patma in Pangandaran National Park where the 2006 tsunami hit following 2005 Aceh tsunami; Thanks to the Rafflesia patma research leader: Sofi Mursidawati, MSc (Center for Plant Conservation-Bogor Botanic Gardens) and my wonderful research networks in Rafflesia spp: Prof Kamaruddin Mat-Saleh, Nery Sofiyanti, Agus Susatya and a few more. It was a dream comes true finally I know Dr Siti Nur Hidayati who wrote and contributed on Rafflesia patma population studies on the famous book 'Rafflesia of the World' by Jamili Nais and Biotropica Journal.

The great news have finally come now, Rafflesia patma has been successfully conserved in ex situ (Bogor Botanic Gardens, Indonesia). Rafflesia patma blooms ex situ in Bogor Botanic Gardens since its last bloom in 1929 (after 81 years) on 2 June 2010 (of 10 knops but 3 knops not survived), it blooms completely on 3 June 2010. Actually Rafflesia patma, Rafflesia rochussenii and Rafflesia arnoldii have been recorded bloom ex-situ in Bogor Botanic Gardens in 1929 but the events were not scientifically recorded other than revealed from a Dutch researcher's research log and newspapers. Congrats to Sofi Mursidawati as the research team leader, congrats for the research team for all hard works, congrats to Bogor Botanic Gardens and Indonesian Institute of Sciences..! This is the world record for the ex-situ conservation success on Rafflesia patma.

@Dr Siti Nur Hidayati, I personally appreciate her pioneer research on Rafflesia patma at Pangandaran National Park, your pioneer hardwork has been a wonderful knowledge contribution and scientific references for the following research.

@Mr. Ngatari, the Rafflesia patma blooms must be his greatest achievement lifetime for his outstanding-skilled propagation. Congrats..!

My passion in Plant Conservation

Seed sonservation as a plant conservation strategy

As one effort of Plant Conservation, Bogor Botanic Gardens has Seed Conservation section. Great team work: Dian-Soetrisno-Sita. For the establishment, improvement and development process, we would thank to: Amas, M.E. and my colleagues: Bpk/Ibu Engkom, Yuniar, Mimin, Harun, Elly, Melani.

This work involves researches in seed ecology, reproductive phenology, seed germination and seedling recruitment and survival as well as plant regeneration that set me work in the field/forests, glass/shade house and laboratory.

Raising public awareness for plant conservation

Education Program & environmental activities for Plant Conservation

involved in "Greening Townsville" Program worked together with JCU Students (enrolled BT3410 and BT5410: Revegetation and Land Rehabilitation) and City Councill Staff revegetated for three days between August-October 2006. I will be involved during my study at JCU until 2010
